The Spark: Solving the Volunteer’s Dilemma

Every great product starts with a problem. For John Hyland, the founder of ClubSpot, the problem wasn't in the boardroom, it was on the pitch.
While studying a Master's in Sports Management, John remained deeply involved with his local GAA club, Gowna in Cavan. He saw firsthand the administrative burden placed on volunteers: the growing costs of running sports clubs, GDPR headaches, and the constant struggle to collect membership fees in cash.
He realised that while the rest of the world was moving to mobile, local sports clubs were being left behind with spreadsheets and cash boxes. The goal was simple but ambitious: Give volunteer-led clubs the same digital power as professional sports organisations.
Incubation: The Cavan Digital Hub Years
In 2020, ClubSpot moved into the Cavan Digital Hub. This wasn't just office space; it was an ecosystem. Being surrounded by other tech innovators and having access to high-speed infrastructure allowed the team to focus purely on product development.
"The environment at the Cavan Digital Hub was crucial for our early days. It gave us the professional footing we needed to transition from an idea into a scalable technology company." - John Hyland, CEO
During this incubation period, ClubSpot didn't just build a tool; we built a team. We graduated from the Hub not just with a product, but with a robust business model that attracted the attention of Enterprise Ireland, securing HPSU status.
The Technology: More Than Just Payments
What sets ClubSpot apart in the Sports Tech landscape is our focus on identity. We don't just process payments; we provide clubs with their own custom-branded mobile app.
Whether it is a GAA club in Galway or a soccer team in the UK, our platform handles:
GDPR Compliant Data Management: Removing the risk from club officers.
Recurring Revenue Generation: Digitising club lotto and fundraising.
Member Communication: Direct push notifications, bypassing the noise of social media.
Scaling Up: From Start-up to Scale-up
The growth since those early days has been exponential. The demand for digital transformation in sports administration has seen ClubSpot expand rapidly:

Team Growth: Expanding to a team of 35+ across sales, tech, and customer success.
New HQ: Moving to a new office base in Stradone, Co. Cavan.
Commercial Success: Helping clubs generate millions in revenue through their digital platforms.
The Future
We are proud of our Cavan roots, but our vision is global. As we continue to roll out new features and enter new markets in the UK, the US and Australia, our mission remains unchanged: To help sports clubs run efficient, sustainable, and profitable organisations.
