The Connacht championship can be a minefield for those contesting it. Mayo has succeeded in the straight knockout format of the Covid led championship but Roscommon and Galway have toppled their neighbours on equal occasions to bring the Nestor Cup to either side of their respective borders. The Smith brothers have been a huge cog in the modern-day Roscommon machine. Donie in particular is a man that takes minding. The potent inside forward has been a thorn in many a defender's side over the last few years and seems to only be coming into his prime. This week we went ClubSpotting with Donie Smith to Boyle GAA Club.
What are your first memories of your club Boyle?
When I was a 7 year old going down to U10 training every Saturday morning. I was probably the smallest player on the team but I loved it.
Who were your sporting idols growing up?
In terms of GAA, Padraic Joyce was always my favourite player. I watched a lot of Galway games when I was younger and being left-footed too probably drew me to like Padraic so much. I can still remember his goal against Kildare in the 98 final when he dummied past the goalkeeper.
What has been the proudest moment of your playing career?
I think the fact that I have been able to represent my county team at every level since 2007. I haven’t missed a year and it’s something I take pride in being lucky enough to stay injury-free and have the desire to keep coming back year after year.
Toughest opponent you have faced?
Mick Fitzsimons! Need I say more?
Best Player you have played with?
Any pre-game rituals or superstitions?
Tying my boots at least twice each before I play the match.
What are your hopes and ambitions for the remainder of the season?
Stay fit, stay hungry and hopefully win trophies.
