The masterplan vision for the growth of the Sport Ireland Campus was recently unveiled by by Taoiseach Micheál Martin. The masterplan proposes both a vision and framework for the growth of the campus and the long-term development of associated sporting facilities over the next 15–20 years.
Envisioned within the plan are a number of additions to the Sport Ireland campus, which is already home to world class sporting and support facilities.
In addition, the vision proposes a strong emphasis to be placed on the delivery of multiple small and medium-sized projects on an annual basis that support National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and strengthen community participation. Moreover, there will also be particular focus on improving public transport links to the Campus and importantly, a strong commitment to sustainability.
The Sport Ireland Campus masterplan will be realised through a capital development programme over the next 15–20 years. It is envisaged that individual building and infrastructure projects will be delivered in a series of phases over the life cycle of the masterplan, with the first high-level project for delivery likely to be the National Velodrome and Badminton Centre. A decision on the the planning application that was lodged with Fingal County Council by Sport Ireland is expected in the coming weeks.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin was joined by Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar; Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin; Minister of State for Sport and the Gaeltacht Jack Chambers, Chairperson Sport Ireland Board Kieran Mulvey, Sport Ireland CEO Una May and Chair of the Sport Ireland Campus Development Committee Pat O’Connor, at the launch yesterday.
Speaking at the launch, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said:“The Sport Ireland Campus is already an invaluable asset as part of the sporting infrastructure of the country and the developments as laid out in this document will enhance what are already world class facilities. The development of the Campus to date and the future developments have been funded by significant Government spending and this Government is committed to supporting sport in Ireland because we are aware of all the benefits that being involved in sport at any level brings to individuals and communities.”
