ClubSpotting with Paddy Collum

You would do well to find many players as committed to his county's cause as the Longford Number 1. Paddy Collum was first called in the Longford Senior panel as an 18-year-old, fresh off the back of a Leinster Minor triumph in 2010. He did have to be patient however, trying to permanently take the jersey from the great Damien Sheridan was no easy task but he eventually made his championship debut in 2015. It is a testament to him, that he has remained in that position ever since, and represented his province in the meantime also. The Fr. Manning Gaels man embodies what it means to play for one of the so-called ‘weaker’ counties, year after year making himself available for an outside chance at glory. This week we went ClubSpotting with Paddy Collum.

What are your first memories of your club Fr. Manning Gaels?

My first memories of my club would have been going to Pearse Park to see the seniors in the county final in the 90s and 2000s.

Who were your sporting idols growing up?

Growing up in a club like Fr. Manning Gaels I was lucky to see some great footballers, most notably Padraig Davis and David Hannify.

What has been the proudest moment of your playing career?

The one that stands out for me was winning a county championship title with my brother David.

Toughest opponent you have faced?

As a goalkeeper sharp forwards are not what you want to see, so the toughest opponent has to be Frankie McGee from Dromard, he is lethal in front of goal.

Best Player you have played with?

Padraig McCormack from Killoe. He played at full-back and was outstanding when we played together. But he could play anywhere on the pitch and still be up there as a fantastic player.

Any pre-game rituals or superstitions?

Only one… when I tape up the wrists I write a point or two on them and just take a few minutes to myself before going out for the warm-up.

What are your hopes and ambitions for 2022?

Stay healthy and fit. Hopefully, go far with Longford and have a good championship with my club.
