Following the appointment of Darragh Egan as senior hurling manager in 2021, the Model County enjoyed a promising campaign in springtime of last year. They overcame a mid-season slump in Leinster by emerging victorious over Kilkenny, and progressing to the All-Ireland series. Despite their narrow defeat to Laois in their Walsh Cup opener in Mountrath on Sunday, a stellar performance was delivered from centre-back Damien Reck, powering through the Laois defence, and raising the white flag for the yellow bellies. We were delighted to head to the sunny-south east to go ClubSpotting with Wexford and Oylegate-Glenbrien star Damien Reck.
1. What are your first memories of your club Oylegate-Glenbrien?
Pulling on tractor wheels as a young lad underage would spring to mind! Then obviously following the adult team through the years, itching to be old enough so I could play with them.
2. Who were your sporting idols growing up?
I would’ve watched different sports growing but Tommy Walsh, Brian O’Driscoll and Thierry Henry would’ve been my sporting idols.
3. What has been the proudest moment of your playing career so far?
Winning with your club is special, I’ve been part of two Intermediate winning teams and enjoyed a great journey in Leinster last year. Winning a Leinster title with Wexford in 2019 is definitely up there!
4. Who is the toughest opponent you have faced?
I’ve been up against some serious talent. But I’d have to edge towards a colleague of mine in Lee Chin. His power and athleticism is very hard match!
5. Who is the best player you have played with?
I’ve had the pleasure of playing alongside some excellent players. Paul Morris stands out for me, on and off the field. A real leader and has such intelligence for the game!
6. What are your hopes and ambitions for the new season?
Cliché, but we will just take each game as they come. If my ambition wasn’t to win an All Ireland, then I’d be wasting my time.
